PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is a simple building which employs straw bale construction on a simple steel frame platform for its primary materials. In addition there are exterior walls in between the straw blocks that are created out of an earthen adobe mixture and cement, in which resides a recycled glass bottle aggregate. This glowing mosaic mixture is freeform in some areas forming a kaleidoscopic array of light and in other locations becomes a focused representation of the radio station branding in the form of the call numbers, 99.9.
The radio station is a corner watchdog over the enclosure and is connected to the media center and library to facilitate communal use of physical, intellectual and cultural resources.
The radio station and the retail space share a corner within the enclosure where money can be collected for the use of phones, computers, copiers and printing services.
This retail nook overlooking the basketball and soccer fields includes interior and exterior seating for a work area which includes copy machines, Skype phones banks and internet access tables with which to generate pecuniary energy. The Skype server bank can facilitate many phones in this front overhang area. This will be a hub of activity that swirls the collective energy of basketball with that of the broadcast radio station.
In the middle of the space is the reception area which lies between the preschool environment and the library and media center. There is a work surface which wraps around the perimeter of the space on which the computers are located. Natural light comes in through the windows which are easily covered with the fabric blinds on tracks.
The enclosed portion of the structure is similar in footprint to it’s neighbors, but is capped by an enlarged solar collection canopy, forming a sloped extension plane to shelter a congregation area serving as an indoor-outdoor internet café, meeting area and possible staging ground. This is also a place from which to watch athletic events or cultural activities while you access the internet, make phone calls or work in the lab.
This community canopy is held up by posts which have windmills at the top and phones on the lower part. The main beacon windmill atop the tallest post receives windpower from any direction and creates a formal announcement as a useful kinetic sculpture. There are other slightly lower posts which feature brackets for snap-on advertising used to generate revenue. The solar power generated from the roof surface will be used to power the lighting at night for these advertising boards and act as a security feature by illuminating the areas around the media center and radio station/bakery area.
The entire south west corner of the building hinges open onto a raised platform to serve as a stage for performances, and when not used as such, can be secured and melt into the day care center. The perimeter of this multi-use deck can be enclosed by a large outdoor curtain attributing more usable square footage to the interior space. Additionally, opening both this corner and the doors located in the retail space enables for cross ventilation along the full axis of the building.
In essence the building is a little shed with a large solar canopy sheathed in holographic solar paneling and held up by windmills and skype phone-tables that opens up to an area connecting day care, theater, media research and education , soccer, and other athletic events as well as radio station production and retail operations (e.g.baking, food prep).
