PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The intention of this design is to create both a prototype for future computer resource centers, and an open, adaptable community space specific to the site. The strategy is that all of the components of the computer facilities will be prefabricated off site in a factory by skilled workers. Semi-transparent wall panels will be wired so they can accept the attachments of computer peripherals, thus eliminating the need for skilled technical workers on the building site. The computer facility can be easily “assembled” by local builders. Solar panels are included so that the structure is self sufficient in terms of energy. Next, the rest of the resource center can be constructed in local materials using a familiar construction system. This design uses a bamboo and native stone structure. The stone is located at the perimeter walls to act as a fire barrier and also at the radio station to give sound insulation. Corrugated metal sheets, typical of the area, are attached to a track system and act as the exterior walls. These sheets are movable to allow for the occupants to decide the amount of light and air they receive, and they can be locked when the building is not occupied. The entrance to the site attempts to formalize the “street” and give it some definition. Hinged panels fold up when the center is open and pulled down to secure the entrance at night. At the entrance, a raised platform bridges the drainage ditch and is the main circulation path throughout the site. A depression in this platform is located in the courtyard area and is meant to be a meeting place and also a stage for community performances and celebrations. Also along the street edge is a service window for the internet cafe. Here residents can purchase the services offered and also can deliver recyclable materials which are stored in the rear of the site. Internet credits are exchanged for these materials, giving all residents an opportunity to use the facility. Also located at the rear of the site are the new bathrooms, book storage, and also the existing medical clinic.
