PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This entry for the Kallari Association Chocolate Factory aims to connect the Kallari Association to the global marketplace through technology and also by providing a unique tourist destination. We recognize the importance of the chocolate factory within the community and for the individual, and so we designed spaces to be enjoyed by both.
The guiding force behind this entry was to celebrate the possibilities inherent in the unique topography of the land, rather than feel controlled by its limitations. We saw the slope of the hillside as possessing the potential to physically embrace the complex, create beautiful viewpoints, and to also provide methods for environmental conservation.
Auditorium –On the hillside there is a curved retaining wall nestling the auditorium within the landscape; on the other side, the space opens out to the views. The curved wall embraces the community gathered within. The strong and close presence of the earth represents the harmonious relationship between the people and the nature around them. Functionally, the hillside helps regulate the temperature of the space, so that the auditorium can be inhabited any time of year.
Chocolate Factory – The chocolate factory is also built into the hillside and it is crowned with a green roof. The roof aids in water absorption during heavy downfall, and helps regulate the high temperature and noise created by the machinery in the factory. Light wells in the roof provide light to the factory, and can be opened to aid in circulation when weather permits. The green roof will be an unforgettable example for all who visit the factory and will inspire them to incorporate green elements into their own lives.
Visitors’ Center – The visitor’s center houses the library, café, and gallery. The building’s exterior walls are sliding screens, made of mosquito net stretched over bamboo frames. The mosquito net has sensuous, translucent qualities and permits air flow, while providing enclosure from insects. The module also contains a solid panel that can be closed to lock up the space or to provide shelter in the event of harsh weather.
The screens open to provide full views allowing passage onto an exterior deck. This deck contains cafe tables as well as the handicraft market. It also provides access to a tower, which a visitor can climb to witness the spectacular views that the site has to offer.
The roof of the visitor’s center is covered with solar panels, offsetting energy use for the entire complex. The lower part of the roof contains a rain gutter that channels water into a collection device, this water is redirected for use in the building and in the garden for irrigation. Living Quarters – Each of the rooms in the living quarters: bedrooms and common areas alike, opens onto private patios and gardens. These private spaces allow for retreat from the public aspects of the building. In addition to providing a space that the workers can call their own, it also fosters and acknowledges community spirit for whatever group of workers might inhabit the space at any given time.
Garden – The garden path takes each visitor on a lush journey through the heart of the complex. The stone path begins in a central courtyard, and travels between the chocolate factory and visitor’s center culminating at the patio. The patio provides a spot for visitors to relax, surrounded by native plant life before continuing onto the climax of the journey – the tower. The tower dominates the complex and allows the visitor to experience the stunning landscape views that surround them.
With this entry we aim to demonstrate how an eco-friendly Chocolate Factory and its Community can connect to the world while maintaining their unique identity. It is our hope that this Factory will be an example for other communities and a destination for chocolate lovers around the globe.
