What if New York City:Design Competition for Post-Disaster Provisional Housing (Vertical Village)

Overviewteamupdatesworkspacecalendarfiles

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The intent of this design solution is to recast existing building systems into new confi gurations, to awaken hidden potentials of systems under realized. While the context of this competition gives specifi c times and dates for an emergency, in reality, the event will strike without suffi cient time to design and engineer new emergency relief structures. By using off-the-shelf components, such as construction scaffolding and infl atable tent structures, this design solution illustrates how these systems can be re-contextualized into new scenarios such as open spaces, underpass, and available parcels to create temporary relief housing during ever more inevitable catastrophes. The measure of success for this design is not on inventing something new, but taking something that is readily available and using its inherent properties to solve a new problem. As the need for relief housing dwindles, the systems can be put back to its original use until some other temporary need arises. In this way, the design accomplishes a temporary housing solution without burdening the need with issues of cost, design, manufacturing and lead time.
