PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
With abundant site for the new factory, I propose that it be located near the river, leaving most of the site untouched. The factory and main offices are located parallel to the river, with the production line following the flow of the water. The meeting hall and research library are located perpendicular to the river, drawing a line that connects the factory back to the road and community. The outdoor market and community gardens are to the south of the complex, and serve as a buffer area to the workers’ housing units beyond. The housing is divided into four units that are sited to take advantage of the views of the river.
Deep concrete pylons keep the buildings firmly planted in the ground, and laminated veneer roof trusses provide ample space free of columns on the factory floor. Wood cladding is employ, using readily available materials that keep the complex well-ventilated. Raising the factory on the pylons also allows easy water drainage to the river and offers a factory complex that is gently integrated with the immediate environment.
The factory work rooms are laid out in a spinal column to facilitate the production line. Adjacent to the conching room, at the end of the line, is the café and shop, offering customers a view of the last stage of chocolate production. The administration offices, community research library and employee lunchroom all have views to the east, giving every user a sight of the river’s natural beauty. To let in morning daylight, the roof trusses are offset. They also overhang enough to provide late afternoon shade for the users.
