PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The Shifted Berm

Formally, the pitch is surrounded by an earth berm that has been excavated and transformed at its four corners. The program spaces have been inserted and their pitched roofs emulate and complete the previous shape of the berm, shifting away from the pitch to signal entry points to the seating areas. The seating is positioned on the remaining portions of the berm.

The simple pitched roofs allow for ample rainwater collection opportunities and will feed into a common basin that can be accessed by the community. The earth berms provide a stable and economical foundation for the seating while providing a natural boundary for the football pitch.

By creating a second outer ring, future development of market stalls provide an outer boundary to the site and will allow for the growth of an economic area to complement the initial program.

Project Materials:
-berms of earth
-walls of site produced mud bricks
-columns of saligna gum poles
-joist framing over columns of sawn pine timber
-joist framing over mud brick walls of saligna gum poles
-corrugated iron roofing

These simple materials (or equivalent) are available locally and allow for local labor to be utilized for the project completion. The use of these materials and local labor will keep the project cost well under the $85,000 budget.
