PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The “Lego” House is designed for maximum efficiency
and ease of constructibility. The shotgun
style floor plan provides the most usable space while keeping material and utility costs low. The exterior view of the house shows a Platonic image of the Texas coastal house, showing that it is possible to use modern, sustainable
ideals without ignoring local context. The practical design takes advantage of building
orientation for natural cross-ventilation and lighting.
Standard 8’ wide by 10’ high Agriboard compressed
wheat board SIPS comprise the structure
and envelope of the house. They have an exceptionally high insulation value, little to no waste, and are made in Texas. Used in mass production, Agriboard is more cost efficient than traditional wood frame.
The main design features on the interior; including
doors, countertops, cabinets, and built-in woodwork; use sealed, low formaldehyde plywood.
Sealed plywood is low-cost, easy to use, and aesthetically pleasing.
All components can be pre-assembled with 90% of the finishes, woodwork and appliances installed off-site. The building is “flat-packed” on the back of standard sized truck beds and quickly re-assembled on site using simple tools and fasteners to “snap-together” the panels, much like a set of legos.
