Open-Source Bamboo Shelter

Overviewteamupdatesworkspacecalendarfiles

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A process for community-built bamboo relief housing

“Bamboo DNA's strength comes from its collaborative network of talented people... artists, builders, performance artists, and pretty much anyone who has an interest in seeing bamboo used in creative new ways.”

— Gerard Minakawa, Artist

This relief housing strategy and bamboo pod ‘peanut’ strategy grew out of a full-scale sculptural collaboration with Bamboo DNA and Natural Builders at the Coachella Festival of Arts and Music. The collaboration produced a primary ‘bamboo wave’ sculpture and a related range of quickly constructed ‘peanut’ pods. A small group of people with little more than their hands and split bamboo lengths may set up strong, tarp-coverable shelters for relief situations in a matter of minutes. The flexibility of the construction approach allows for any number of sizes and configurations and easy deconstruction and reuse.
