PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
To maximize efficiency, sustainability, and effectivity. The use of shipping containers (8',40',8.5') as the basic module allows for a strong and secure frame for both transport and destination. By allowing these containers to be both field, distribution center, and community center makes for an addition to the community that does not overwhelm it. Imagine the containers as bookends to a market or community space that transforms into a futsal pitch. Boys and girls are encouraged to enter their names into the distribution computers in return for gear(stored in size-specific lockers). Later, they might provide input or design ideas for future products as a way to both provide opportunity for economic growth. Their names would allow them to reserve correct-fitting shoes, and the computer would eliminate any bullying that might occur by picking teams from the names that are input into the computer - and would also allocate colored pinnies for each player by team. By allowing a 3rd party to organize the pick-up games, sensibilities of the children will be safe, and hopefully happy. The changing rooms for boys and for girls offer privacy that allows both sexes to play on equal footing. The open / shut nature of the containers has a new dimension with the tripartite division of the box. Delivered by Ro-Ro truck, the containers come fully assembled / stocked with gear. At game time, the field / boxes could be fully open, the boxes marking both ends of the field, with the mid section acting as a goal. At other times, the boxes could remain partially open to allow for community functions such as internet access, micro-lending, or telephone services. The segmentation of the boxes allows them to adapt to the needs of the community, while still maintaining security and functionality. Since two containers would be necessary to create a pitch, different roles could be played by the containers, with one being the distribution center / changing areas, while the other could be a small library, info center, micro-lender, or simply stalls for a market. If aggregated, the containers could begin to define a larger public area, one with a multitude of possible functions, that could help to enliven the community fabric for the public to enjoy, while still fulfilling the goal of creating spaces for children to play.
