I wonder if there is a project to build an Internet Cafe in a Box project in Liberia. Oddly enough, Anchorage has connections there. And they seem ready for this next step, beyond medical attention, that of sustainable internet. Anybody interested?
my profile note:
I have traveled to Afghanistan twice to install computer internet labs in two schools in rural Afghanistan public schools, one for girls, one for boys. This was after doing this across rural Alaska. The main focus after installation really was all about teaching the computer and internet use. Also, supporting those schools after I left, via the internet. I was in this village a month each time.
Then I went to Africa to Kisumu Kenya in the Manyatta slums for the Young Generation Center run by the most brave and good Seline, and to the Malawi Children's Village outside of Mangochi, run by the very hard working Sibale. We changed the model and made great leaps in sustainability. We installed internet cafés. The goal was to build a self-sustaining internet business, strengthen the surrounding community, teach business to the orphanages and the orphans have free internet for education. It is hoped to add co-op participation, anchor NGO and government internet accounts, and medical information services as well as communication with doctors, etc. One idea is the photographing of the orphans eyes with the "red" reflection. Email the photos of the eyes to eye doctors who can then measure the quality of read for early disease detection and prevention. Also support services for copying, printing and color photography for IDs, weddings, etc. all to support and sustain the internet cafe as well as the orphanage. I have developed a system of business to support these areas.
I would love to replicate and broaden the "Internet Café in a Box" approach to sustainable business, internet and education for orphanages and co-ops. This works in Africa and could easily work in many places, even the US.
Cameron spoke last night in Anchorage and I signed up here the next morning. Thanks,
Joseph

we are doing a number of projects with internet cafes.... maybe the best thing to do would be to have you contact the Architecture for Humanity office by phone? Elaine Uang and Kimberley o'Dowd (both on teh OAN also) are the program managers... i am sure they'd love to chat.
Hi,
I would indeed like to call. What's the number? I also have air miles as well as family in LaFayette.
Thank you,
Joseph
It's not about being digital. It's about being human.
