PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The first ecoMOD prototype, the OUTin house, was completed in the Fifeville neighborhood of Charlottesville, Virginia. The house, a two-unit condominium, was constructed off-site as eight small modules from structural insulated panels, with a potable rainwater collection system, solar hot water panle, no-VOC finishes and sustain-ably forested wood flooring. The evaluation team researched the environmental impact of the materials, methods and affordability of the house. They have also designed and installed a system to monitor the house's energy performance.
The primary design strategy of the OUTin house is to make the entire site habitable and useable. Sunlight, breezes, vegetation, the earth and the surrounding context are brought into the house through passive design strategies and shifted modules that define outdoor/indoor spaces.
