PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The interaction of children with this merry-go-round produces the kinetic energy needed to illuminate the L.E.D. lights overhead. The goal of this project is to form a tangible connection between the work and resources needed to produce even a small amount of electricity.
In addition to the educational properties of this merry-go-round, the lights together with the revolving motion of the playground toy provide a unique visual experience.
This merry-go-round was presented as part of a community proposal for ‘Archetype for The Living City’, a competition held in Toronto to design a sustainable house and community. This competition was organized by the Design Exchange and the Toronto & Region Conservation Authority in 2005.
Designed by Gonzalo Cárdenas and Lorraine Gauthier of Work Worth Doing (www.workworthdoing.com).
This project has been added to the Open Architecture Network in honour of Edward Burtynsky for his contribution of a foreword to the book Shift:Positions.
