PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Design challenge to create pre-fabricated housing suitable for families requiring 3-4 bedrooms in addition to the usual 1-2 bedroom houses with the focus being keeping the final product affordable and as all-inclusive as possible. A huge segment of the North American population cannot afford housing suitable for their size and income which results in wasted resources through renting or the purchase of inefficient mobile homes, high impact housing, apartments, old housing etc which leads to a great deal of energy consumption and inability to direct finances towards improving the families education, health and so on.
At this point in time the only affordable alternative in housing for a vanishing middle class is to rent, purchase sub-standard housing or rely on the traditional manufactured home. A great majority of America's workers cannot afford a mortgage above 100,000.00 which leaves a huge number of people with no stake in home ownership. The current manufactured homes have poor re-sale and do not follow traditional housing in building value over time.
Pre-fab housing offers hope but at this time the cost of building one of a size large enough, (3-4 bedrooms) is still above and beyond most families abilities to pay.
The HNA project is my hope to start a seed, one which will attract sponsorship and talent to create designs, process and manufacturing to address these issues.
Rough Guidelines:
Designs should focus on economy while maintaining quality.
Designs should present attractive, modern styling.
Designs should be sustainable and low impact.
Designs including off-grid power are preferred.
Design should be turn-key including interior finish and appliances.
Budget guideline would range from 75k to 200k complete.
