In 2007, Public Architecture co-sponsored Park(ing) Day with the San Francisco arts collective, Rebar. Park(ing) Day, which was pioneered by REBAR, is a day-long global event centered in San Francisco, where artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform parking spots into ‘PARKs.’ It is very similar in thought to the Sidewalk Plazas, and thus, this was a natural partnership. In addition to sharing coordination duties of the overall event, Public Architecture created a full-scale mockup of both Brainwash Plaza and a Folsom Street populated with a string of “Plazas.” Park(ing) Day 2007 was held on Friday, September 21. Visit www.parkingday.org for images and more information.

Public Architecture and Rebar are now collaborating on a print publication and a companion web portal that will document emerging efforts globally to use tactical interventions to existing streets in order to transform them to more inclusive, vibrant public spaces.
