PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Deforestation contributed to the devastating landslides and widespread destruction experienced by the people of Kashmir. An action as simple as planting a tree alongside each house and reforesting the land will stabilize the soil. Healthy, stable soil will nurture the land and support earthquake-resistant houses.

An icon of Kashmir, the Chinar is considered a symbol of perfection, stability, maturity, longevity and beauty. This ‘royal tree’ of Kashmir can live hundreds of years. Recognized as a sacred space, the trunk of the Chinar is used for meditation and worship within it is said to fulfill all desires. With its umbrella-like leaf canopy and vast root structure the Chinar provides protection to all who gather around it, giving shelter in the winter and shade in the summer.

If every family that rebuilds their house also plants a tree, the strong roots that grow will provide a firm foundation for the future.

For people to heal, their communities must heal. For communities to heal, the land must heal. Replanting the land will heal the land and her people.
