PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The people who live in the favelas of Sao Paulo have a resilient perception of community but lack the resources to make it stronger and uncontaminated. Our goals for this project are to provide a place for merchants to sell goods, an environment where the community can learn and build their ambitions along side stable, hygienic housing and last but not least a place for children to learn, grow up safely and have fun.
Our “Pitch for Progress” begins with the construction of a small metal shop where local residents can be taught and employed in the field of metal prefabrication and welding. After a few weeks of educational work shops, the first commission will be the fabrication of the futsal stadium. After the community learns to build this sturdy structure they can utilize this knowledge to build better living structures.
The futsal stadium will be built mostly of local materials to keep cost low and to create a facility that will be developed from the local context. Local materials to be incorporate include tubular aluminum, corrugated metal panels, poured concrete and concrete blocks, bamboo and lastly clay which will function as the playing surface of the futsal pitch. Other items which will need to be brought in from a longer distance include but are not limited to water filtration systems, solar panels and all components necessary for computers and internet access.
Once the stadium is complete it can be used as a multi function facility throughout the day and night. During the day children and adults can play futsal, learn about healthcare, gardening, how to utilize bamboo and have access to the World Wide Web, where learning anything is just a click away. At night it can be utilized as a concert hall or any other festive activities.
